Male version of what i want to be in the future
In every tournament, there are household names (like Drogbe, Yaya Toure, Gyan etc) that highlight the occasion and there are some young and coming players that make their names as well. In the last AFCON edition, Ghana’s John Boye emerged as a rookie that has come to stay with his exceptional performance and he has not looked back since.
Though the closing ceremony is two games away, one player that has emerged from the current Ghana squad is Wakaso Mubarak. I watched this kid from his days at Ashanti Gold and at the 2005 FIFA U-17 tournament in Peru. He and his idol- Sulley Muntari, do not just resemble each other, nor do they have a common thunderbolt left foot but also their disciplinary records. Peru 2005 did not just produced Giovanni Dos Santos (Mexico) and Anderson (Man U), It also produced Wakaso Mubarak of Ghana and Espanyol. It might have taken him longer to emerge as a force to reckon with but I am convinced this dude has come to stay.
Ghana was eliminated at the group stages of the tournament partly due to Wakaso’s disciplinary records. He was sent off in Ghana’s first match against the host nation Peru in just 10’ minute. That didn’t hold him back from being fired from his club Elche in the Spanish second division after the tournament. For some strange reason or perhaps luck, he always turns tragedy to triumph. Villarreal also picked him up and gave him the platform to showcase his talent. After just 17 games, they were relegated, again, luck shone on Wakaso. Espanyol signed him and kept him in the La Liga.

He has been doing exceptional well on the field but that didn’t prevent him from tagging Spanish referees as racist recently. A very strong allegation that he later retracted to avoid sanction from the Spanish FA.
One thing I always notice aside his talent is his confidence. He has so much confidence that it is hard to believe he just played his seventh game for Ghana. With Asamoah Gyan running away from penalty kicks in recent times, Wakaso, a rookie in the team has been taking those responsibilities and he hasn’t disappointed so far. He takes set pieces in games too, a duty that has define great players in our generation; that shows how confident the team as a whole have in his abilities.
With five goals from just seven caps for Ghana, the future is so bright for this lad that he probably needs some shades on.
It’s my hope and prayer that they bring the trophy back home. This will build their confidence towards the upcoming dicey world cup-qualifying matches.
God Bless Ghana
Go Black Stars!!!
